A pricing committee should receive competitor evidence as one bounded input, not the answer. The pre-read must show the exact public movement, the affected segment and workload, customer and internal economics, strategic alternatives, and the decision requested. This prevents a rival's headline price from hijacking a broader pricing system.

What this guide covers

  • the evidence required before competitor pricing enters the room;
  • how to normalize unlike offers;
  • the right pre-read structure and committee sequence;
  • a copyable evidence packet.

Establish the decision before assembling slides

Name the question:

  • change the value metric;
  • adjust a tier boundary or allowance;
  • add, remove, or reframe a package;
  • revise discount or commitment policy;
  • update sales guidance without changing price;
  • run a customer or workload test;
  • take no action.

“Respond to Competitor A” is not a decision. A committee without a defined decision becomes a market-update meeting.

Verify the competitor movement

Collect the current primary source and a comparable prior state. Record region, currency, billing toggle, plan, value metric, price, included usage, entitlements, commitment, and entry motion.

Official pages such as Cursor pricing and Intercom's pricing FAQ show why one monthly number is insufficient. The buyer may be paying by seat, usage, resolution, or a hybrid boundary. Unknown contract terms remain unknown.

Normalize at the buyer workload

Build two or three realistic scenarios: low, expected, and high use. State assumptions and sensitivity.

effective cost =
  fixed subscription
  + metered usage
  + required add-ons
  + expected overage
  + implementation and operating burden

Stripe's usage-based billing documentation explains meters and usage records. Stripe's pricing and packaging guide places value metric, tier structure, and price in one system. Use those concepts to model, not to claim that one model is universally best.

Put competitor evidence beside four internal lenses

LensEvidence the committee needs
Customer valuesegment, job, willingness evidence, objections, alternatives
Unit economicsmarginal cost, support load, gross-margin sensitivity, abuse risk
Growth motionacquisition, activation, expansion, retention, sales complexity
Strategydifferentiated value, control point, positioning, long-term learning

A competitor price cut can be irrelevant to your target segment. A packaging change can matter even when the price is stable. A new free tier can change acquisition behavior without changing willingness to pay.

Use an explicit evidence hierarchy

Label inputs:

  • observed fact: direct current source or internal measured result;
  • calculation: transparent formula with assumptions;
  • customer evidence: scoped interviews, deals, or behavior;
  • interpretation: plausible implication;
  • unknown: evidence not yet available.

Do not let a polished chart erase those boundaries.

Run the committee for dissent and decision

Send the pre-read early. In the meeting, confirm the movement, challenge the workload and segment assumptions, hear the strongest no-change case, select a bounded option, and agree on instrumentation. Record disagreement and what evidence would reverse the decision. Keep the original evidence packet beside the resulting decision so later reviewers can distinguish what was known then from what became clear afterward.

Use EXVIV pricing monitoring, Evidence Compare, and market pages for public context. The public EXVIV pricing page establishes EXVIV's own current offer; it is not a substitute for internal economics. The startup CI workflow maintains the source record between committee meetings.

Method note

This packet supports a cross-functional pricing decision. Current offer data, customer evidence, and economic assumptions must be verified by their owners; material financial or contractual decisions need appropriate review.
